I'm what you might call a "serious doodler." I am no professional artist, but every now and then I get this irresistible urge to create something. Sometimes it's an idea or an image in my mind that I'm trying to capture on paper before it fades away. Other times, I want to preserve a precious moment or scene that I am beholding. Maybe I'll sketch someone's likeness. Or I'll want to make original greeting card to give someone while I am away from home.I have used sketchpads of all different sizes from a 5 x 7 inch book to a ginormous project pad I got for an art class. Some have been wire bound; one was a gummed pad with tear-out pages; another is bound like a book. They've been bound at the side or flip-top pads. This is my first perforated sketchpad.I use a lot of media, as well. I have done pictures with watercolor and permanent markers. I've tried regular and water-soluble colored pencils. I have done charcoal, pen and ink, acrylic and watercolor paints, pastels, gel pens, etc. My go-to media are regular graphite pencils and colored pencils. However, lately I have enjoyed watercolor brush pens and acrylic marking pens. When I draw, I do a considerable amount of erasing and smudging to soften and define areas. This sketchpad has a nice texture and thickness that allows me to do both with satisfying results. It has a nice weight and is thick enough to allow me to use either markers or paints without bleeding through. As mentioned, it does have some texture, but is not so rough that it affects my drawings in an adverse way. And I am not "scrubbing" the paper away when I have to erase. At a little over 8 x 10 inches, the pad is a nice size. It's about an inch thick and has 75 pages, so it's portable and will last. With the spiral top, I can flip it open, and work on a flat surface, rather than having to jockey around an open book. The perforation in the pages is nice, since I can tear out a picture to give to someone or turn in for an art assignment. These pages are suitable for framing, since they fit a standard 8 x 10 frame or mat. Because the paper is acid-free, the drawing or painting should last a good while and won't damage whatever it's placed in.I was disappointed that the pages and covers of my two sketch pads were damaged in shipping. They were shrink-wrapped together and tucked into a padded envelope, which clearly did not adequately protect them from the "mail monkeys." The spiral wires are made of soft metal, so they got bent out of shape, too. I was able to bend them back partway, but it is something of an irritation that my brand new pads are not pristine.Nevertheless, at $9-12 for the two sketch pads, you are getting a pretty good deal. If you do a lot of drawing, then this would be an economical and practical choice.
